Education

Public Assistance
The state provides funding for many public assistance programs. The average state and federal cost per public assistance client is $9,674. The state spends a total of $6.1 billion on public assistance. The federal government spends approximately $5.1 billion on public assistance each year.
In 2016, the average public assistance client was served by a staff of 1.41 persons.
The federal government estimates that the average public assistance client only spends $50 a month on food, and another $50 a month on utilities and housing. The rest of their expenses go towards public assistance programs.
According to the U.S. Census Bureau's Supplemental Poverty Measure, Pennsylvania ranks 11th in the nation for child poverty. This means that 6.6 percent of children in Pennsylvania live in poverty.
